Alice Panikian — Biography

Alice Panikian, born May 23, 1985, is a Bulgarian-Canadian figure who has made her mark as a journalist, television personality, model, and beauty queen. Her journey in the pageant world culminated in her crowning as Miss Universe Canada on March 21, 2006. She completed her secondary education at William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute in Toronto in 2003. Standing at an impressive 6'0" (1.83 m), Panikian holds the distinction of being the tallest national titleholder in Canadian pageant history. Her stature and presence garnered considerable global media attention, positioning her as a strong contender to follow in the footsteps of then-reigning Miss Universe, fellow Canadian Natalie Glebova. However, the historical precedent of no country winning the Miss Universe title consecutively presented a significant challenge, a fact many commentators overlooked, with some even deeming her a more formidable candidate than Glebova. While Panikian did not capture the Miss Universe crown in 2006, she secured an admirable 6th place finish, marking her as the last Canadian delegate to place in the competition until 2016. Beyond her pageant achievements, Panikian is also a writer of short stories and enjoys pastimes such as volleyball and yoga. Her heritage is a blend of Bulgarian and Armenian, with her Armenian lineage traceable to her paternal grandfather, which explains her surname. She immigrated to Canada with her parents at the age of five. Panikian pursued higher education at York University, where she earned a degree in English and Communications. Her academic focus included broadcast journalism, and she has made her home in Toronto, Ontario, with aspirations of a career in journalism or television hosting. Prior to her Miss Universe Canada win, Panikian represented Canada at the Reinado Internacional del Café, or International Queen of Coffee pageant, held in Manizales, Colombia, on January 9, 2006. There, she achieved a historic victory, becoming the first Canadian to win this international title. Her success at the Miss Universe Canada Pageant also included accolades for "Miss Photogenic" and "Best in Swimsuit." Panikian was slated to represent Canada at the Miss International 2007 pageant in Tokyo, Japan, but academic commitments at college led to her withdrawal, with Justine Stewart ultimately taking her place.
