Born June 10, 1965, in British Hong Kong, Amy Yip Chi-mei established herself as a prominent figure in Hong Kong cinema. Her slender physique, contrasted with notably large breasts, positioned her as a significant sex symbol during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Yip gained particular recognition for her performances in Category III films such as Sex and Zen, Robotrix, and Erotic Ghost Story. Notably, Sex and Zen holds the record as the highest-grossing Category III film in Hong Kong's box office history. Yip developed a distinctive approach to her roles in adult films, employing clever camera work to avoid full exposure of her breasts, a technique that became known as the "Yip tease."

Her initial foray into the entertainment world began in the mid-1980s with appearances in various television series. The 1987 film Erotic Ghost Story marked a turning point in her career, propelling her to widespread popularity across Hong Kong and other parts of Asia by the late 1980s and early 1990s. Yip retired from acting in 1992. Reflecting on her career, she candidly expressed regret that the nature of her films limited the number of memorable roles she could undertake. However, she singled out the 1991 movie Queen of the Underworld as an exceptional project, where she portrayed Sister Har, a character who ascended from the fringes of society to become a prominent figure in Hong Kong's nightlife during the 1960s and 1970s.

Over the years, rumors circulated regarding Yip's marriage to her long-term boyfriend, orthopedics surgeon Lim Kiam Hwee, and her potential pregnancy. Yet, in an early 2006 interview, Yip stated to an East Weekly reporter that she was in a committed relationship with her boyfriend of over 15 years and had no plans for marriage or children. She also revealed her involvement in food and beverage businesses in Hong Kong and Macau, which kept her occupied. When asked about a potential return to acting, Yip firmly declined, expressing contentment with her current, relaxed lifestyle and a lack of desire to return to the demanding schedule of filming and promotional tours. She also voiced her satisfaction with not having to compromise her modesty for a living. In an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled "The Dark Age," a character named Xander humorously mentions wishing to be with "Amy Yip at the waterslide park" during a game of imaginative escape.
