About Ann Wedgeworth
Ann Wedgeworth, a distinguished American character actress, carved a memorable niche in television and theater. She is perhaps most widely recognized for her portrayal of Lana Shields, the alluring older upstairs neighbor in the popular sitcom THREE'S COMPANY. Others may recall her as Hilda Henley in SWEET DREAMS or Merleen Elldridge in EVENING SHADE. Her talent was further celebrated with a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play for her work in CHAPTER TWO, earned in 1978.
Born Elizabeth Ann Wedgeworth in Abilene, Texas, she navigated her way through Highland Park High School in University Park, Texas, graduating despite a less-than-stellar academic record. During her high school years, she was a classmate and childhood friend of the sensational Jayne Mansfield. After completing her studies at the University of Texas in 1957, she dropped her first name and relocated to New York City, marking significant milestones in her life. Following several audition attempts, she gained admission to the Actors Studio during a period when James Lipton was reportedly absent.
Ann Wedgeworth made her Broadway debut in the 1958 play Make a Million. Her extensive stage career included numerous roles in both Broadway and off-Broadway productions, such as PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT, BLUES FOR MR. CHARLIE, THE LAST ANALYSIS, THE FIRST ANALYSIS, THE MIDDLE ANALYSIS, and THIEVES. Her Tony Award win in 1978, as noted, underscored her considerable acting prowess.
Her role in THREE'S COMPANY was particularly impactful. John Ritter, who played the lead character, reportedly frequently questioned the show's producers about his character's resistance to Lana's advances, suggesting a disconnect between the character's established persona and his reactions. The narrative implied that a character known for his amorous inclinations would likely view the advances of an attractive older woman as flattering, especially given his constrained romantic life within the show. While Ann Wedgeworth's personal feelings on the matter were not publicly documented, it's hoped she shared Ritter's perspective. Her presence undoubtedly added a vibrant dynamic to the show, contributing to the appeal of the various characters who pursued Jack over the years. The news of her passing at the age of 83 was met with sorrow, and she will continue to be remembered.
