A practitioner of method acting, she honed her craft under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. Bancroft's cinematic journey began in 1952 with the noir thriller Don't Bother to Knock, followed by fourteen other films in the subsequent five years. Her Broadway career took flight in 1958 with Two for the Seesaw, earning her a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. The following year, she captivated audiences as Anne Sullivan in the original Broadway production of The Miracle Worker, securing the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.
