Born Wendy Miller on August 1, 1956, in New York City, C.J. Laing emerged from a middle-class upbringing with scant details available regarding her formative years. A devotee of the 1970s San Francisco music scene, particularly the Grateful Dead, she embarked on a journey to the West Coast in her late teens, hitchhiking and eventually settling into a communal living situation with the performance collective known as the Angels of Light.

Seeking to support herself, Laing auditioned for the Mitchell Brothers, whose name was synonymous with adult entertainment, and in 1974, at the age of 18, she made her debut in their adult film loop series, Juke Joint, under the pseudonym Gwen Starr. Upon her return to New York, she was cast by the Buckley Brothers for her first feature-length adult film in 1975, sharing the screen with Jamie Gillis and adopting the professional name C.J. Laing.

Throughout the 1970s, Laing appeared in over 50 films and loops, frequently collaborating with East Coast directors such as Radley Metzger, Roberta Findlay, and Shaun Costello. Her filmography includes notable titles like Anyone But My Husband (1975), where she portrayed the frustrated housewife Nora Pelham; Barbara Broadcast (1977), as the alluring reporter Roberta; Dominatrix Without Mercy (1976), playing a mistreated prostitute; and Water Power (1977), as vice detective Irene Murray. Her performances, often characterized by raw intensity and explicit scenes involving anal sex, bondage, and fisting, were recognized for their daring nature. Laing was frequently cast in victim roles, appearing in scenes of brutal rape in films like Sex Wish (1976) and The Taking of Christina (1976), which aligned with the era's prevalent "roughie" subgenre. These exploitation films, a staple of grindhouse cinema, often intertwined sex and violence, with a particular focus on male aggression towards women through themes of kidnapping, rape, and murder, and increasingly incorporated explicit sexual content with the rise of mainstream adult cinema.

In the latter half of the 1970s, Laing also engaged in live performances at the Mitchell Brothers’ O’Farrell Theatre and various San Francisco strip clubs. While she did not secure any major accolades during her career, her contributions were later acknowledged with inductions into the XRCO Hall of Fame in 1989 as a Film Pioneer and the AVN Hall of Fame in 2005, recognizing her impact on the Golden Age of Porn.
