Carice Van Houten — Biography

Carice Anouk van Houten, born on September 5, 1976, is an accomplished actress and singer from the Netherlands. She earned her first leading role in the television film Suzy Q in 1999, which garnered her a Golden Calf for Best Acting in a Television Drama. Just two years later, she clinched another Golden Calf, this time for Best Actress for her work in Miss Minoes in 2001. Van Houten rose to prominence with her notable performance in Black Book in 2006, which remains the highest-grossing Dutch film of all time. This role earned her a second Golden Calf for Best Actress, along with nominations from the Chicago Film Critics Association, the European Film Academy, and the Online Film Critics Society. She was later nominated for a Saturn Award in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Valkyrie, released in 2008. Van Houten continued to shine, winning her fourth and fifth Golden Calfs for Best Actress in The Happy Housewife (2010) and Black Butterflies (2011), respectively. Her portfolio of English-language films includes prominent roles in Repo Men (2010), Black Death (2010), and Brimstone (2016). Internationally, she gained significant recognition for her portrayal of Melisandre in the HBO series Game of Thrones, which aired from 2012 to 2019. For her exceptional performance on the show, she received nominations for two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, as well as a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
