Carol Doda — Biography

Carol Ann Doda, a notable figure in San Francisco's North Beach district, carved her niche as an American topless dancer from the 1960s into the 1980s. She holds the distinction of being the first publicly performing topless dancer in the United States. Doda's professional life began as a topless waitress at the Condor Night Club, situated at the bustling intersection of Broadway and Columbus. Her image was prominently displayed on a large, illuminated sign outside the venue.

Her debut in topless performance occurred on the evening of June 19, 1964. The spectacle of her act involved a grand piano being lowered from above by hydraulic mechanisms, with Doda gracing the top of the piano as she danced. Her entrance was further enhanced by her descent from an opening in the ceiling. Doda also made appearances in several films, including Head (1968), Machine Gun McCain (1969), and Honky Tonk Nights (1978).
