About Cher
Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian, is an iconic American vocalist, actress, and television figure. Frequently dubbed the "Goddess of Pop" by the media, she is celebrated for representing female empowerment in a traditionally male-dominated entertainment industry. Cher's career commenced in 1965 when she gained prominence as one half of the folk-rock duo Sonny & Cher, alongside her then-husband Sonny Bono, before carving out an impressive solo career that has spanned over six decades. Following her initial success with Bono, she gained further acclaim with her hit singles "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" and "You Better Sit Down Kids."
As the 1970s progressed, Cher achieved remarkable success with several number-one hits on the US Billboard Hot 100, including "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves," "Half-Breed," and "Dark Lady," earning her the title of the female solo artist with the most number-one singles at the time. After her divorce from Bono in 1975, she released the disco album Take Me Home in 1979, which enjoyed significant popularity. Cher experienced a resurgence in her music career in 1987 with the release of her rock-oriented albums Cher (1987), Heart of Stone (1989), and Love Hurts (1991), producing notable singles like "I Found Someone," "If I Could Turn Back Time," and "Save Up All Your Tears."
In 1998, she reached new heights with her dance-pop album Believe, which featured the groundbreaking use of Auto-Tune in her vocals, a style known as the "Cher effect." The title track became the top song in the US for 1999 and the best-selling single by a female artist in the UK. Cher continued to release music, with her albums Closer to the Truth (2013) and Dancing Queen (2018) both debuting at number three on the Billboard 200 and marking her highest-charting solo releases in the US.
Her television career took off in the 1970s with CBS shows such as The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which attracted over 30 million viewers weekly during its run, and her self-titled series, Cher. In 1982, Cher made her Broadway debut in Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, which she also starred in for its film adaptation. She earned critical acclaim for her roles in films like Silkwood (1983), Mask (1985), and Moonstruck (1987), the latter winning her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Cher contributed to the soundtrack of Mermaids (1990), which produced the UK number-one hit "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)," and she made her directorial debut with a segment in the anthology If These Walls Could Talk (1996).
During the 2010s, Cher starred in notable films such as Burlesque (201
