Constance Wu's journey began in Richmond, Virginia, where she was raised by immigrant parents from Taiwan. Her mother pursued a career in computer programming, while her father dedicated himself to academia as a college professor. Even in her formative years, Wu found her passion in performance, actively participating in Richmond's vibrant community theater. At the age of sixteen, she set her sights on New York City, enrolling at the prestigious Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, a move that marked the beginning of her continuous professional engagement.

During her time in New York, Wu honed her craft in classical theater before swiftly pivoting to the realm of film. Her early work included roles in several films featured at the Sundance Film Festival, such as Stephanie Daley in 2006 and Year of the Fish in 2007. In 2010, she relocated to Los Angeles. Her established theater and film experience proved invaluable, leading to a part in another Sundance selection, Sound of My Voice, in 2011. A significant turning point came in 2014 when she was cast as Jessica Huang in the ABC comedy series Fresh Off the Boat, which debuted in 2015. This show, inspired by Eddie Huang's memoir, transported viewers to the 1990s, chronicling the experiences of a Taiwanese family transplanted to the suburbs of Orlando.

Beyond her acting career, Wu finds pleasure in long-distance running, camping, playing the piano, and reading. She currently resides in Silverlake, Los Angeles, sharing her home with her pet rabbit, Lida Rose. In 2018, she captivated audiences as Rachel Chu, an American college professor who finds herself involved with a Singaporean multimillionaire, portrayed by Henry Golding, in the wildly successful romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians. As of October 2024, Constance Wu maintains a significant online presence, boasting 771,000 followers on her Instagram account.
