Delta Burke — Biography

Delta Burke is an American performer, producer, and writer, most famously recognized as the stout yet feisty Suzanne Sugarbaker in the CBS sitcom DESIGNING WOMEN, which aired from 1986 to 1991. Her portrayal earned her two Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, though she did not secure a win for either. Born in Orlando, Florida, in 1956, her mother was Jane. While persistent speculation links her parentage to Walt Disney, these claims are generally dismissed. It is also important to distinguish her from the drag performer Delta Work.

Burke's other television ventures include roles in FILTHY RICH, DELTA, WOMEN OF THE HOUSE, and DAG, the latter a program whose unusual title is indeed accurate. She has also produced and taken leading roles in several made-for-television films. In the 2000 film WHAT WOMEN WANT, she appeared, and it is a lesser-known fact that she served as Helen Hunt's understudy, ready to step in if needed. Fortunately, her participation remained grounded rather than venturing into the extravagant territory of a film like SHOWGIRLS. From 2006 to 2007, Burke also made notable guest appearances on the legal drama BOSTON LEGAL. On the stage, she graced Broadway in THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE in 2003 and STEEL MAGNOLIAS in 2005. Reports suggest that as she has matured, her conduct has become more unconventional and less predictable, with her peculiar demand to be referred to as "Delta, of Venus" being a notable example.

Delta Burke has been married for a considerable time to Gerald McRaney, known for his roles in SIMON & SIMON and MAJOR DAD. She reportedly stepped in for him in both of those series when he experienced sudden illness, with only the application of his signature mustache wax posing any difficulty.
