About Diane Ladd

Rose Diane Ladner, known professionally as Diane Ladd, is a seasoned American actress with an extensive career spanning over two hundred film and television productions. Her talent has earned her significant accolades, including three Academy Award nominations: one for her performance in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore in 1974, which also garnered her a British Academy Film Award, another for Wild at Heart in 1990, and a third for Rambling Rose in 1991. Beyond the Oscars, Ladd has been recognized with three Primetime Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe Award nominations, securing one Golden Globe for her work on the sitcom Alice between 1980 and 1981.

Her impressive filmography also features memorable roles in Chinatown (1974), National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989), Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), Primary Colors (1998), 28 Days (2000), and Joy (2015). Ladd is the mother of acclaimed actress Laura Dern, a daughter she shares with her former husband, actor Bruce Dern.

Born Rose Diane Ladner, she was the only child of Mary Bernadette Ladner, a homemaker and actress, and Preston Paul Ladner, a veterinarian specializing in poultry and livestock products. While her family resided in Meridian, Mississippi, Ladd entered the world in Laurel, Mississippi, during a Thanksgiving visit with relatives. Her lineage connects her to notable figures such as playwright Tennessee Williams and poet Sidney Lanier. Ladd was raised in her mother's Catholic faith.

Her marriage to actor Bruce Dern, with whom she had shared screen time, lasted from 1960 to 1969. The couple had two daughters: Diane Elizabeth, who tragically passed away at eighteen months old due to a drowning accident, and Laura Elizabeth, who followed in her parents' footsteps to become an actress. Diane Ladd and Laura Dern have collaborated on numerous projects, including the films Wild at Heart, Rambling Rose, Citizen Ruth, and Inland Empire, as well as the HBO series Enlightened. They also appeared together in White Lightning and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, though Laura's contributions in these two were uncredited. Ladd was previously married to William A. Shea Jr. from 1969 to 1977 and later married her current husband, Robert C. Hunter, in 1999. In 1988, Ladd publicly supported Jesse Jackson's presidential campaign.

In 2018, Ladd faced a severe health scare after inhaling toxic farm emissions, leading to a misdiagnosis of pneumonia and a grim prognosis. Fortunately, her daughter Laura facilitated her transfer to another hospital, where she made a complete recovery.

Ladd's television career began in 1971 when she joined the cast of the CBS soap opera The Secret Storm
