Elena Apostoleanu — Biography
Elena Alexandra Apostoleanu, known to the world as INNA, entered life on October 16, 1986. Her journey began in Mangalia, Romania, and she grew up in the seaside town of Neptun. Before her musical ascent, she was a student of political science at Ovidius University. A pivotal encounter with the Romanian music group Play & Win set her on a path toward a career in music.
In 2008, she initially adopted the stage name "Alessandra" and explored a pop-rock sound. However, later that same year, she transitioned to the moniker "INNA" and embraced house music. Her debut single, "Hot," released in 2008, achieved significant global acclaim, topping charts not only in Romania but also on Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay. This success paved the way for her self-titled debut album in August 2009, an effort that earned Gold and Platinum certifications. The album spawned several European hits, including "Amazing," which became her second number-one track in Romania.
INNA's sophomore album, I Am the Club Rocker, arrived in 2011, propelled by the worldwide hit "Sun Is Up" from the previous year. This track garnered the Eurodanceweb Award, a historic win making INNA the first and only Romanian artist to achieve this recognition. In 2011, reports confirmed INNA as the highest-earning artist from Romania and Eastern Europe. Her subsequent album, Party Never Ends, released in 2013, was a contender for Best Album at the Romanian Music Awards for two consecutive years and reached the top ten in Mexico. It featured "More than Friends," a collaborative track with Daddy Yankee that saw moderate success across Europe.
A significant milestone occurred in 2014 when INNA joined Atlantic Records. That same year, she released the commercially successful "Cola Song" with J Balvin, a track chosen to promote the FIFA World Cup. Her fourth, self-titled studio album arrived in October 2015 and included "Diggy Down," her third Romanian number-one single.
Since 2017, INNA has taken on a role as a coach on the talent show Vocea României Junior, sharing the judging panel with Andra and Marius Moga. In the same year, she unveiled her fifth album, Nirvana, with singles that charted well in countries like Romania and Turkey. Her career continued to expand with a record deal from Roc Nation in 2018, leading to her sixth studio album, Yo, in May 2019. This entirely self-conceived project, sung entirely in Spanish, represented a creative shift, incorporating experimental and gypsy-influenced musical elements.
The single "Bebe," released in March 2020, marked her first release outside the Yo
