Federica Pellegrini holds current world records in both long and short course 200 meter freestyle, as well as the long course 400 meter freestyle. Her groundbreaking performance at the 2009 World Championships in Rome saw her become the first woman to complete the 400 meter freestyle in under four minutes, achieving a time of 3:59.15. Pellegrini stands as Italy's first female Olympic swimming champion and is uniquely distinguished as the only Italian swimmer to have set world records in multiple events. Her exceptional achievements were recognized with the World Swimmer of the Year award in 2009 and the European Swimmer of the Year title in both 2009 and 2010.
Her impressive medal haul includes Olympic Gold in the 2008 Beijing 200 meter freestyle, and Silver in the 2004 Athens 200 meter freestyle. At the World Championships (Long Course), she secured Gold in the 2009 Rome 400 meter freestyle and 200 meter freestyle, and in the 2011 Shanghai 200 meter freestyle and 400 meter freestyle. Silver medals were earned in the 2005 Montreal 200 meter freestyle, and Bronze in the 2007 Melbourne 200 meter freestyle. In World Championships (Short Course), she claimed Silver in the 2006 Shanghai 200 meter freestyle, and Bronze in the 2006 Shanghai 400 meter freestyle and 2010 Dubai 400 meter freestyle.
At the European Championships (Long Course), Pellegrini won Gold in the 2008 Eindhoven 400 meter freestyle and the 2010 Budapest 200 meter freestyle. Silver was achieved in the 2008 Eindhoven 4x100 meter freestyle, with Bronze in the 2008 Eindhoven 4x200 meter freestyle and 2010 Budapest 800 meter freestyle. The European Championships (Short Course) saw her dominate with Gold in the 2005 Trieste 200 meter freestyle, 2008 Rijeka 200 meter freestyle, 2009 Istanbul 200 meter freestyle, and 2010 Eindhoven 800 meter freestyle. Silver medals were won in the 2006 Helsinki 400 meter freestyle and 2007 Debrecen 400 meter freestyle. Bronze finishes included the 2005 Trieste 400 meter freestyle, 2008 Rijeka 4x50 meter medley, and 2010 Eindhoven 4x50 meter medley.
