Her parents separated when she was a child, and she was raised in Witney, Oxfordshire, maintaining a close relationship with her father. Early on, she found her passion in acting, joining the local Dramascope group and participating annually in pantomimes at the Oxford Playhouse from the age of eleven. Her talents extended beyond acting; she was a capable singer and dancer and played the saxophone, which led to her involvement with the Oxford Youth Music Theatre during her teenage years. In 2001, her talent earned her a scholarship to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.
Upon graduating in 2004, Mbatha-Raw embarked on a diverse career across various media. Her theatrical work garnered significant acclaim, including a powerful portrayal of Juliet Capulet at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre in 2005, a performance opposite Andrew Garfield that earned her a Best Actress nomination at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards. The same year, she also took on the role of Octavia in "Antony and Cleopatra" at the same venue. In 2009, she stepped into the iconic role of Ophelia in "Hamlet" on both the West End and Broadway, sharing the stage with Jude Law.

On the film side, she had a supporting part in the 2011 romantic comedy "Larry Crowne," penned and directed by Tom Hanks, who also starred in the film. A particularly celebrated performance came in Amma Asante's 2013 film "Belle," where her depiction of Dido Elizabeth Belle earned her a British Independent Film Award for Best Actress and a nomination for Most Promising Newcomer, along with a Satellite Award nomination for Best Actress.
Mbatha-Raw continued to impress audiences, starring in the 2014 romantic drama "Beyond the Lights," a role that secured her a Gotham Award nomination for Best Actress. Her promising career was further recognized in 2015 with a BAFTA Rising Star Award nomination.
