About Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Abdullahi Omar has represented Minnesota's 5th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2019, aligning with the Democratic Party. Prior to her federal service, she was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019, representing a portion of Minneapolis. Her current congressional district encompasses all of Minneapolis and some adjacent suburban areas. Within Congress, Omar holds the position of deputy chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Her policy priorities include advocating for a $15 minimum wage, establishing universal healthcare, offering student loan debt forgiveness, ensuring the protection of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, and dismantling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Omar has been a vocal critic of Israel, supporting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. She has also condemned Israel's settlement policies and military actions in Palestinian territories, along with what she perceives as the influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups on American politics. In February 2023, the Republican-led House of Representatives voted to remove Omar from her position on the Foreign Affairs Committee, citing her past remarks about Israel and concerns about her impartiality.

In her personal life, Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009. She states that she and Elmi underwent a faith-based divorce in 2011 and subsequently reunited with Hirsi, with whom she had a third child in 2012. Elmi and Omar legally finalized their divorce in 2017, and Omar and Hirsi legally married in 2018. In October 2019, Omar filed for divorce from Hirsi, citing an "irretrievable breakdown" of their marriage, with the divorce officially concluded in November 2019. In March 2020, Omar married Tim Mynett, a political consultant whose firm, the E Street Group, received substantial contracts totaling $2.78 million from Omar's campaign during the 2020 election cycle. The campaign's financial relationship with Mynett's firm drew scrutiny from her Democratic primary opponent and conservative critics, garnering significant media attention both locally and nationally.

Omar holds historical significance as the first Somali American to serve in the United States Congress and the first woman of color to represent Minnesota. She is also recognized as one of the initial two Muslim women, alongside Rashida Tlaib, to be elected to Congress. As of March 2024, Ilhan Omar has cultivated a substantial online presence with 1.2 million followers on Instagram.
