Javicia Leslie — Biography

Javicia Leslie, an American performer, cemented her professional beginnings with a significant part in the 2016 Lifetime movie Swim at Your Own Risk. Her career trajectory then saw her join the cast of BET's drama The Family Business as a main character from 2018 onward, and simultaneously, she was a regular on the CBS comedy-drama God Friended Me, a role she held from 2018 to 2020. That same year, 2019, she took on the leading role in the film Always a Bridesmaid. Leslie's impactful presence extended to the superhero realm in 2021 when she stepped into the titular role of The CW's Batwoman. She also embodied Red Death, a villainous counterpart, in the initial five episodes of the ninth and concluding season of The Flash.

Originally from Maryland, Leslie spent her formative years in Upper Marlboro. Her academic journey led her to Hampton University, where she contributed to stage productions including Seven Guitars, for colored girls, and Chicago. After completing her studies, Leslie relocated to Los Angeles with aspirations of a career in acting. Prior to her Batwoman casting, she was a consistent presence on the BET series The Family Business and featured in the 2019 film Always a Bridesmaid. She also held a series regular position on God Friended Me from 2018 to 2020, portraying the sibling of Brandon Micheal Hall's character.

In 2020, Leslie was chosen to embody the lead in Batwoman, stepping into the role after the original actress, Ruby Rose, departed. She portrays Ryan Wilder, a character specifically developed for the series, who assumes the Batwoman identity in its second season. Additionally, Leslie brings to life her malevolent Earth-4125 doppelganger, known as Red Death, appearing in the first five episodes of the ninth and final season of The CW's live-action series, The Flash. Leslie identifies as bisexual and practices the Christian faith. Her training includes Muay Thai.
