Starting out as a young performer in both acting and music, she appeared in numerous national television advertisements and eventually landed a role on the Disney Channel program Kids Incorporated between 1989 and 1991. Her career took a significant turn when she was cast as Sarah Reeves Merrin on the Fox series Party of Five from 1995 to 1999, which served as her major breakthrough. She subsequently became well-known as a young performer through her performances in the 1997 horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer, returning for the 1998 follow-up, and through her appearance in the 1998 teen comedy Can't Hardly Wait.
