About Kate Winslet
Kate Elizabeth Winslet CBE, born on October 5, 1975, is a renowned English actress. Celebrated for her roles in independent films, particularly in period dramas, she has established a reputation for portraying strong and multifaceted women. Her impressive career has earned her an array of honors, including an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, three BAFTA Awards, and five Golden Globe Awards. Winslet was recognized by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people globally in both 2009 and 2021. In 2012, she was appointed as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Winslet's daughter is the actress Mia Threapleton.
She honed her craft by studying drama at the Redroofs Theatre School. Winslet made her first appearance on screen at the age of 15 in the British television series Dark Season (1991). Her film debut came with her role as a teenage killer in Heavenly Creatures (1994), which was followed by a BAFTA Award win for her performance as Marianne Dashwood in the 1995 film Sense and Sensibility. Her role in James Cameron's Titanic (1997) launched her into global stardom, contributing to the film's status as the highest-grossing film of its time.
Following this success, Winslet chose to pursue critically acclaimed parts in period dramas like Quills (2000) and Iris (2001), instead of focusing on blockbuster projects. A pivotal moment in her career was her role in the science fiction romance Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), where she broke from typecasting, further solidifying her acclaim with performances in Finding Neverland (2004), Little Children (2006), Revolutionary Road (2008), and The Reader (2008). For her portrayal of a former Nazi camp guard in The Reader, she garnered both the BAFTA Award and the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Winslet's performance as Joanna Hoffman in the biopic Steve Jobs (2015) earned her another BAFTA Award. Additionally, she won two Primetime Emmy Awards for her roles in the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce (2011) and Mare of Easttown (2021). More recently, she had a supporting role in the blockbuster science fiction film Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). Winslet won a Grammy Award for her narration of a short story in the audiobook Listen to the Storyteller (1999) and performed the song "What If" for the soundtrack of Christmas Carol: The Movie (2001). She is also a co-founder of the Golden Hat Foundation, which focuses on raising awareness about autism, and has authored a book on the subject.
Having divorced film directors Jim Threapleton and Sam Mendes, Winslet has been married to businessman Edward Abel Smith since 2012, and she has a child from each of her marriages
