Katharine Juliet Ross, born January 29, 1940, is a celebrated American performer across film, theater, and television. Her impressive collection of honors includes an Academy Award nomination, a BAFTA Award, and two Golden Globe Awards. Originally from Los Angeles, Ross spent her formative years in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Her cinematic journey began with the Civil War drama Shenandoah in 1965. Following supporting roles in Mister Buddwing (1965) and The Singing Nun (1966), she secured a part in Curtis Harrington's suspenseful film Games (1967), sharing the screen with James Caan and Simone Signoret. It was Signoret's recommendation that led to Ross's casting as Elaine Robinson in Mike Nichols' acclaimed comedy-drama The Graduate (1967). This pivotal role brought her significant critical recognition, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, a BAFTA nomination, and a Golden Globe win for New Star of the Year.

In 1968, Ross appeared alongside John Wayne in Hellfighters, portraying his daughter Tish Buckman. She garnered further praise for her work in two 1969 Westerns: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here. For these performances, she was honored with the BAFTA Award for Best Actress.

The 1970s saw Ross in leading roles, including the unsettling horror film The Stepford Wives (1975), for which she received the Saturn Award for Best Actress. She also secured her second Golden Globe Award for her compelling performance in the drama Voyage of the Damned (1976). Her other notable projects from this decade include the disaster film The Swarm (1978), the supernatural thriller The Legacy (1978), and the science fiction feature The Final Countdown (1980).

The 1980s were largely dedicated to television films, with appearances in productions such as Murder in Texas (1981) and The Shadow Riders (1982). She later took on a starring role in the network series The Colbys, from 1985 to 1987. Ross largely stepped back from acting in the 1990s, though she made a notable return to film with a supporting character in Richard Kelly's cult classic Donnie Darko (2001). More recently, in 2016, she lent her voice to the animated comedy series American Dad!, and the following year, she starred in the comedy-drama The Hero (2017) with her husband, Sam Elliott.
