When Kathy Shower became a Playmate, she was already raising two young daughters named Melonie, age six, and Mindy, age nine. At thirty-two years old, she became the third oldest Playmate of the Month, following Cindy Brooks, who was thirty-three when featured in April 1985, and Dolores Donlon from August 1957. Shower then claimed the distinction of oldest Playmate of the Year at age thirty-three, surpassing Sharon Clark, who had been Miss August 1970 and Playmate of the Year for 1971. This record would later pass to Julianna Young in November 1993.

Throughout Playboy's history, relatively few women have served as Playmates during their thirties. Bettie Page was thirty-one in January 1955, Dolores Donlon was thirty-six in August 1957, Cindy Brooks was thirty-three in April 1985, Julianna Young was thirty-three in November 1993, Rebecca Anne Ramos was thirty-five in January 2003, and Khrystyana Kazakova was thirty-five in November 2020. Shower remains notable for achieving this honor at such a mature age during an era when youth typically dominated the selection process.
