Melina Kanakaredes — Biography

Born in Akron, Ohio, Melina Eleni Kanakaredes hails from a family deeply rooted in Greek heritage. Her mother, Connie, was a candy company proprietor, and her father, Harry, worked in insurance. From a young age, the vibrant world of musical theater, particularly the performances of Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera, ignited her passion for the performing arts. Her early creative journey began locally, harmonizing with her sisters and making her acting debut at eight years old in a community production of "Tom Sawyer."

Kanakaredes pursued her studies in music, dance, and theater at Ohio State University before transferring to Point Park College in Pittsburgh. Her formative experiences in Pittsburgh included work in commercials, industrial films, and stage performances at the Pittsburgh Playhouse and Pittsburgh Public Theater. After completing her education, she moved to New York City, honing her craft in off-Broadway productions while supporting her acting ambitions.

Her television career began with a memorable recurring role as a reporter and Jimmy Smits' girlfriend on "NYPD Blue" (1993). She went on to star in the dramas "New York News" (1995) and "Leaving L.A." (1997), and made guest appearances on "The Practice" (1997) and "Oz" (1997). Kanakaredes also earned two Emmy nominations for her work on the long-running soap opera "Guiding Light" (1952). A significant chapter in her career was her five-season portrayal of Dr. Sydney Hansen in the critically acclaimed NBC series "Providence" (1999). This role garnered her the 2000 TV Guide Award for Favorite Actress in a Drama, an honor decided by over a million viewers, and a repeat nomination for the same award in 2001.

In 2003, Kanakaredes welcomed her second child. That same year, she took to the Broadway stage as Sally Bowles in "Cabaret" and filmed the independent movie "Into the Fire" (2005), slated for its debut at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. The fall of 2004 marked her return to television in the highly anticipated CBS series "CSI: NY" (2004), where she starred opposite Gary Sinise. Earlier, in 2001, she appeared on the big screen, co-starring with Robert De Niro in the film "15 Minutes" (2001). Her filmography also includes "Rounders" (1998), "Dangerous Beauty" (1998), and "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996).
