About Nadia Comaneci

Nadia Elena Comăneci Conner, born on November 12, 1961, is a renowned figure from Romania's gymnastics legacy. Her Olympic career is marked by an impressive five gold medals, all earned in individual disciplines. In 1976, at the young age of 14, she etched her name in history by achieving the first-ever perfect score of 10.0 at the Olympic Games. During those same 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics, she amassed six more perfect 10s across her routines, securing three gold medals. Her remarkable performance continued at the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, where she claimed two additional gold medals and recorded two more flawless 10.0 scores. Throughout her distinguished career, Comăneci accumulated a total of nine Olympic medals and four World Artistic Gymnastics Championship medals. She is widely recognized as one of the most celebrated gymnasts globally, her performances lauded for their artistic flair and grace, which propelled the sport to new heights of international popularity in the mid-1970s. El País has hailed her as "the most iconic gymnast of the 20th century," and the Laureus World Sports Academy named her among the Athletes of the 20th century. Comăneci has resided in the United States since 1989, having sought political asylum from then-Communist Romania prior to its revolution that December. She later formed a partnership and married American Olympic gold medalist gymnast Bart Conner. Their wedding took place in Bucharest after the fall of the Communist regime and was broadcast live in Romania. Conner subsequently established his own gymnastics school. Nadia Elena Comăneci was born in Onești, a town nestled in Romania's Carpathian Mountains, in the historical region of Western Moldavia. Her parents were Gheorghe and Ștefania Comăneci, and she has a younger brother. Her parents separated in the 1970s, and her father relocated to the capital, Bucharest. Nadia and her brother, Adrian, were raised within the traditions of the Romanian Orthodox Church. In a 2011 interview, her mother explained that she enrolled Nadia in gymnastics classes due to her exceptionally energetic and active childhood disposition, which made her challenging to manage. Following her extensive career in elite athletics, Comăneci earned a degree in sports education from Politehnica University of Bucharest, qualifying her to coach gymnastics. Her journey in the sport began in kindergarten with a local team named Flacăra, under the guidance of coaches Duncan and Munteanu. At age six, her talent was recognized by Béla Károlyi, who spotted her and a friend performing cartwheels in a schoolyard. Károlyi, seeking young gymnasts to train, pursued them and eventually found Nadia. The other girl, Viorica Dumitru, went on to a
