Her journey into the spotlight began in the early 1990s when she took on the role of Beth Brennan in the popular Australian television drama, Neighbours. After departing the show, she embarked on a successful music career. Her breakthrough arrived in 1998 with a hugely successful rendition of Ednaswap's song "Torn."

Her personal life saw a significant connection form in 1999 when she met Daniel Johns, the lead singer of the band Silverchair, backstage at a concert in London. Their relationship blossomed after a subsequent meeting at the ARIA awards after-party in Sydney later that year. Following a period of an on-again, off-again romance, the couple announced their engagement just before Christmas in 2002. They exchanged vows on New Year's Eve in 2003, opting for a beachfront wedding in Port Douglas, Queensland. Imbruglia herself shared in a 2002 interview that meeting Johns had been instrumental in helping her overcome depression. Johns contributed to Imbruglia's musical endeavors, penning the song "Satisfied" for her 2005 album, Counting Down the Days, which he also helped produce. He further collaborated on the track "Want" for her 2009 release, Come to Life. The strain of their long-distance relationship, with Imbruglia residing in London and Johns in Newcastle, Australia, inspired her 2005 single "Counting Down the Days." The couple ultimately announced their divorce on January 4, 2008, citing a natural drifting apart due to insufficient time spent together. In 2013, Imbruglia officially became a naturalised British citizen. In a personal announcement on Instagram on October 9, 2019, Imbruglia shared the joyful news of the birth of her son, conceived through IVF with the use of donor sperm.
