About Nelly Furtado
Born on December 2, 1978, Nelly Kim Furtado is a Canadian vocalist and songwriter who has achieved significant global success, selling over 40 million records and establishing herself as one of Canada's most accomplished artists. Her career is marked by a remarkable ability to adapt her sound and explore diverse musical styles. She first captured attention with her trip-hop flavored debut, Whoa, Nelly!, released in 2000. This album proved to be a triumph, both critically and commercially, delivering two chart-topping singles on the Billboard Hot 100: "I'm Like a Bird" and "Turn Off the Light." The former earned her a prestigious Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Her second album, Folklore, arrived in 2003. This introspective collection delved into her Portuguese heritage with a folk-infused sound. While its singles found moderate success in Europe, the album's performance, viewed in contrast to her debut, was sometimes characterized as a challenging second effort. Furtado experienced a monumental resurgence with her third album, Loose, in 2006. This release represented a dramatic artistic and visual reinvention, becoming her most commercially successful album to date, with sales exceeding 10 million copies worldwide, positioning it among the decade's best-selling albums. Loose unleashed a torrent of four global number-one hits: "Promiscuous" featuring Timbaland, "Maneater," "Say It Right," and "All Good Things (Come to an End)." Her collaboration with Timbaland on "Give It to Me" in the same period also reached the top of the charts internationally. In 2008, her duet with James Morrison, "Broken Strings," achieved chart dominance across Europe.
The year 2009 saw the release of Mi Plan, Furtado's debut album entirely in Spanish, which garnered her a Latin Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album. Her fifth album, The Spirit Indestructible, released in 2012, drew inspiration from a sense of nostalgia. Following a decision to pursue her career independently, Furtado launched her own label, Nelstar Entertainment, and released her sixth album, the indie-pop oriented The Ride, in 2017. Throughout her career, she has been recognized with numerous accolades, including one Grammy Award from seven nominations, one Latin Grammy Award, ten Juno Awards, a BRIT Award, a Billboard Music Award, an MTV Europe Music Award, a World Music Award, and three Much Music Video Awards. Nelly Furtado is honored with a star on Canada's Walk of Fame and was appointed Commander of the Order of Prince Henry on February 28, 2014, by Portugal's then-President, Aníbal Cavaco Silva.
