Born Nicole Houston Reed in the sprawling city of Los Angeles, California, the actress and screenwriter carries a diverse heritage. Her mother, Cheryl Houston, is a hairdresser and beautician, while her father, Seth Reed, worked as a set designer. Reed has two brothers. Her family tree boasts roots in Ashkenazi Jewish, German, British Isles, and a quarter Italian lineage. Her parents separated when she was just two years old, leading her to reside with her mother. Though she attended Alexander Hamilton High School, Reed eventually left the traditional classroom, opting for home education. Entering her adolescence brought a challenging chapter, prompting her to leave her childhood home at the age of 14. Her introduction to filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke occurred when Hardwicke was romantically involved with Reed's father. They maintained a connection, and in 2002, they began co-writing the screenplay for Thirteen, drawing from Reed's own teenage writings. When Hardwicke struggled to cast the role of Evie, a hesitant Reed was ultimately convinced to step into the part, earning widespread critical praise for her performance. Reed reunited with Catherine Hardwicke in 2008, taking on the role of Rosalie in the blockbuster film Twilight.
