Born on August 14, 1976, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Poonam hails from a family involved in business. Her mother, Poojashri, is a respected Hindi poetess with a published body of work and a history of performing at poetry gatherings. The family's ancestral roots lie in Rajasthan. Poonam completed her primary and higher education within Mumbai.

Her professional journey began in the modeling arena, where she graced campaigns for notable brands such as Killer Jeans, Dove soap, and Paneri sarees and dress materials. In 1995, her striking image featured on the cover of Debonair Magazine.

Poonam's Bollywood debut was significant, landing her a role in Mohra, a film featuring prominent actors like Akshay Kumar, Raveena Tandon, and Sunil Shetty. She caught the attention of filmmakers during a commercial shoot, which led to her casting as Priya Agnohotri, the on-screen wife of Sunil Shetty's character. Her performance in this role was lauded for its crucial contribution to the narrative progression.

In 2003, Poonam ventured into filmmaking with the movie Aanch, directed by Rajesh Kumar Singh and starring veteran actors Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal, and Ayesha Jhulka. This film garnered considerable critical acclaim and achieved moderate commercial success, particularly resonating with a discerning audience in northern India.
