About Rene Russo

Rene Russo was born in Burbank, California, to Shirley (Balocca), a barmaid and factory worker, and Nino Russo. When Rene was just two years old, her father, an artisan and mechanic, abandoned the family, leaving her mother to raise Rene and her sister, Toni, alone. Nino's heritage was Italian, while Shirley's was a mix of Italian, German, English, and Irish. In her junior high years, Rene faced challenges with scoliosis, which required her to wear a full-torso brace. Her tall stature earned her the nickname "Jolly Green Giant" from her peers. After entering Burroughs High School alongside her classmate Ron Howard, she found herself somewhat isolated, even after the brace was removed. Struggling with both academics and the social dynamics of school, Rene ultimately dropped out in the tenth grade. With limited financial resources, she took on various part-time jobs over the following year and a half, often for the associated benefits. She sold snacks at a movie theater to enjoy free films, served as a hostess in a restaurant for complimentary meals, and worked as a cashier at Disneyland, which allowed her free access. At times, she juggled multiple jobs. Her final position, focused solely on earning a paycheck, was at an eyewear factory where she inspected contact lenses.

At 17, while attending a Rolling Stones concert in 1972, Rene caught the attention of John Crosby, a scout and manager from International Creative Management. He suggested she pursue modeling and arranged test photos for her. Within months, Rene signed with Ford Modeling Agency, quickly achieving success as a print and runway model. Her major break came when she appeared on the cover of Vogue. By 1975, Rene was featured on numerous magazine covers, establishing herself as one of the most prominent models in America, and she began appearing in several television commercials throughout the 1980s. As a fashion model, she set the standard for the industry. However, as she approached her 30s, the demand for her modeling work began to decline, which is typical for models at that age. After a few more commercials, Rene stepped away from modeling and the entertainment industry for a time. Financially stable for years to come, she devoted herself to a deep exploration of literature and Christian theology. She also turned her focus to theater and acting, taking on roles in small regional theaters in Los Angeles and throughout California.

Rene made her television debut in 1987 with a supporting role in the short-lived series Sable. Two years later, she entered the film industry with a significant role as the girlfriend of the lead character in Major League. Initially, her film roles tended to be that of supportive girlfriends and wives until her breakout performance came as an Internal Affairs detective in Lethal Weapon 3 in 1992. Over the years, she has gained acclaim for her ability to hold her own alongside some of Hollywood’s
