About Romy Tarangul
Hailing from Frankfurt [Oder] in East Germany, Romy Tarangul established herself as a formidable German judoka. Competing primarily in the under-52 kilogram division for the JC 90 Frankfurt (Oder) club, Tarangul achieved a significant milestone in 2008 by securing the silver medal at the European Championships. This impressive performance earned her a coveted spot in the Beijing Olympics. There, in the women's 52 kg event, she finished in ninth place. Her Olympic journey began with a victory over Uzbekistan's Sinura Djuraeva, but a close defeat to Japan's Misato Nakamura in the round of sixteen, followed by a loss to Belgium's Ilse Heylen in the repechage, ended her medal hopes. That same year, in August 2008, Tarangul, along with fellow German athletes Nicole Reinhardt, Katharina Scholz, and Petra Niemann, appeared nude in the German edition of Playboy. A year later, at the 2009 World Judo Championships, Tarangul reached her highest international achievement to date, clinching a bronze medal in her weight class. The 2012 Summer Olympics in London saw Tarangul again compete, winning her initial match against Natalia Kuziutina of Russia. However, her run concluded in the quarterfinals with a defeat to Italy's Rosalba Forciniti, who ultimately went on to claim a bronze medal. Romy Tarangul wed in 2016.
