She transitioned to film with significant roles in the 1984 dramas Footloose and Firstborn, followed by a string of successful movies in the 1990s, such as L.A. Story (1991), Honeymoon in Vegas (1992), Hocus Pocus (1993), Ed Wood (1994), and The First Wives Club (1996).

Her role as Carrie Bradshaw in the HBO comedy-drama series Sex and the City (1998-2004) catapulted her to international fame.
