Born Noriko Kamachi on March 10, 1962, Seiko Matsuda is a Japanese singer-songwriter who rose to prominence as one of the preeminent Japanese idols of the 1980s. Her career has remained remarkably vibrant, marked by continuous releases of new music, annual summer concert tours, winter dinner shows, prominent roles in advertising campaigns and films, and frequent appearances on television and radio. Her enduring popularity and extensive career have led the Japanese media to bestow upon her the title of the "Eternal Idol."

In January 2011, the Japanese music program Music Station recognized her as the second best-selling idol in Japan's history, with sales totaling 29,510,000 records. She ranked just behind the pop group SMAP and ahead of Akina Nakamori, her most notable contemporary rival of the 1980s, who secured third place. However, in 2016, Ian Martin of The Japan Times offered a contrasting view, comparing her work unfavorably to that of Hikaru Utada and characterizing Matsuda as primarily an idol rather than an artist, suggesting her legacy is better represented by her singles than her albums.

Matsuda once held the distinction for the most number-one hits, a record she maintained from 1983 to 2000 before it was surpassed by B'z. She also held the record for solo artists until Ayumi Hamasaki broke it in 2006. Seiko Matsuda had the honor of closing the prestigious NHK New Year's Eve music show, Kouhaku (Red White Music Battle), in both 2014 and 2015. She has performed on this program a total of 24 times, as of 2020.
