Sui He — Biography
Born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, on September 23, 1989, Sui He emerged from a supportive, middle-class Han Chinese family. Though her parents held traditional views, they encouraged her aspirations. She completed secondary education and began tertiary studies briefly before committing fully to modeling, opting out of further formal schooling. Known simply as "Sui" within the industry, her journey began at seventeen in 2006 when she was discovered during a shopping excursion in her hometown. This led to her participation in a local modeling competition, subsequently securing her a contract with China Bentley Culture Development Co.
Her career took flight after relocating to Beijing. While she made her debut in a domestic fashion campaign in 2008, her international ascent was cemented in 2010 with an appearance at the Fall Ralph Lauren show in New York, marking the start of her global recognition. Sui became a prominent figure within the "Golden Army" of Chinese supermodels who significantly impacted the runway from 2010 onward, a group that also included luminaries like Fei Fei Sun, Ming Xi, and Xiao Wen Ju, among others.
Her professional trajectory included a groundbreaking moment in 2011 when she became the first Asian model to open a Ralph Lauren runway presentation. Represented by New York Model Management, Milan's Fashion Model Management, and Tokyo's Bravo Models, Sui graced runways for prestigious houses such as Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton. She also achieved another milestone in 2011, becoming the second Chinese model to walk for Victoria’s Secret, participating in their shows annually until 2018.
Sui's editorial portfolio boasts coveted cover features for Vogue China (in September 2013 and August 2023) and W Magazine (May 2013), alongside work for Harper's Bazaar China and i-D. She also lent her face to campaigns for Ralph Lauren, Karl Lagerfeld, H&M, and Shiseido. In 2013, she was recognized by models.com, ranking thirteenth on their Top 50 list. Her collaborations extended to esteemed photographers like Mario Testino, and her earnings at her career's zenith reportedly reached millions.
Maintaining a robust online presence, Sui engages her audience of over 800,000 Instagram followers (@hesui923) by sharing updates on her modeling work, travels, and personal life. Her foray into mainstream media has been more limited, primarily consisting of appearances in short films, including Vogue China's digital productions and Ralph Lauren's "The Polo Shirt" in 2014, rather than significant television or film roles. She has, however, made guest appearances on Chinese fashion programs and attended high-profile events like the Met Gala between 2012 and 2018.
