Sydney McLaughlin — Biography

Born Sydney Michelle McLaughlin on August 7, 1999, she is an American track and field athlete specializing in the 400-meter hurdles, an event where she currently stands as the world record holder. Her exceptional talent has propelled her to Olympic gold on two occasions, in the 2020 and 2024 Summer Games, and she also claimed victory at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, on August 8, 2024, she blazed across the finish line in a record-shattering 50.37 seconds, surpassing her previous world best of 50.65 seconds. McLaughlin-Levrone holds a unique distinction as the first track athlete to set four world records in the same discipline. Within a 13-month span, she made history by becoming the first woman to conquer the 52-second mark in June 2021 and subsequently the 51-second barrier in July 2022 in the 400-meter hurdles. Her impressive performance at the 2019 World Championships earned her a silver medal. Across all four of those major competitions, she also contributed to a gold medal-winning performance as part of the women's 4 × 400 m relay squad. Even as a 15-year-old, McLaughlin demonstrated her prodigious ability by securing the 2015 World Youth Championship title. In 2016, she became the youngest participant to qualify for the U.S. Olympic track team since Denean Howard in 1980, finishing third at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a then world under-18 best of 54.15 seconds, which also stood as the world U20 record at the time. She currently holds the world U20 record with a time of 53.60 seconds, achieved in 2018, though she also recorded a junior personal best of 52.75 seconds that year, which was not officially ratified. Beyond McLaughlin-Levrone, only three other women have ever surpassed the 52-second mark in this event, and just one other has broken the 51-second barrier. She boasts six of the ten fastest times ever recorded in the world all-time rankings for the 400-meter hurdles. In 2019, she was crowned the Diamond League champion. Her extraordinary achievements in 2022 were recognized when she was named the World Athletics Female Athlete of the Year.
