Her stage name, SZA, derives from the Supreme Alphabet, where "Z" and "A" symbolize "Zig-Zag" and "Allah," respectively. SZA was born Solána Imani Rowe and spent her childhood in Maplewood, New Jersey. Her father was a producer for CNN, while her mother held a position at AT&T. She has an older half-sister named Tiffany and a niece named Jessica Patrick. SZA's musical journey began when she first crossed paths with Kendrick Lamar during his CMJ performance in 2011.
