Tiril Eckhoff — Biography

Born on May 21, 1990, Tiril Kampenhaug Eckhoff is a Norwegian athlete who once excelled in biathlon. Her Olympic career was marked by significant success, including two gold medals in the mixed relay at the 2014 Sochi and 2022 Winter Olympics. She also secured bronze medals in the mass start at both the 2014 and 2018 Games. At the Biathlon World Championships, Eckhoff amassed an impressive ten gold medals. Her individual world titles include the 7.5 km sprint at the 2016 championships and both the 7.5 km sprint and 10 km pursuit in 2021. She is the sister of fellow biathlete Stian Eckhoff and has been a member of the Norwegian biathlon team since 2008.

In Sochi in 2014, Eckhoff collected three medals: bronze in the mass start, bronze in the women's relay, and gold in the mixed relay alongside Tora Berger, Ole Einar Bjørndalen, and Emil Hegle Svendsen. Notably, she also pursued a degree in engineering at the Norwegian Institute of Technology. The 2016 World Championships, held in Norway at Holmenkollen, saw her claim the 7.5 km sprint title on home snow. That same year, she contributed to a bronze in the mixed relay and played a crucial role in the women's relay gold, achieving a perfect shooting performance in her leg.

The 2019-20 season was a standout year, with Eckhoff winning seven World Cup races, though she finished the overall season in second place behind Dorothea Wierer. She also captured her first discipline title in the pursuit. In the subsequent 2020-21 season, she dominated the Biathlon World Championships 2021, earning four gold medals and a total of six medals across seven events. This success extended to the World Cup, where she won the overall title, achieving the highest number of race wins in a single season since Magdalena Forsberg. She secured discipline titles in sprint and pursuit, setting a record as the first biathlete, male or female, to win seven consecutive races in a specific discipline (sprint). In 2022, Eckhoff was honored with the Holmenkollen Medal.

Due to ongoing health issues, Eckhoff did not compete in the 2022-23 Biathlon World Cup season. On March 15, 2023, she announced via social media her decision not to return to competitive biathlon.
