About Traci Lords

Nora Louise Kuzma was born on May 7, 1968, in Steubenville, Ohio, to a working-class family with Ukrainian and Irish heritage. Her childhood was marked by instability and hardship, shaped by her father's alcoholism and abusive behavior. Following her parents' separation, she relocated to Redondo Beach, California, at age 10 with her mother and siblings. By her mid-teens, she began pursuing modeling and dancing work, entering the adult film industry at fifteen with falsified identification claiming she was twenty years old. She initially appeared in photospreads for publications including Penthouse, where she was named Pet of the Month in September 1984.

Between 1984 and 1987, she became one of the most prominent performers in adult cinema, appearing in roughly one hundred films and videos for major producers such as VCA and Caballero Home Video. She starred opposite notable industry figures like Christy Canyon and Ron Jeremy in titles including Talk Dirty to Me Part III, New Wave Hookers, and Beverly Hills Copulator. Her final legal film, Traci, I Love You, was completed shortly after her eighteenth birthday and was self-financed and controlled by her. Her striking physical appearance, including blonde hair and petite frame, combined with her dynamic on-screen energy, earned her the nickname "The Princess of Porn" and made her a fan favorite.

In 1986, authorities determined she had been underage throughout her entire film career, creating significant legal consequences for producers and studios. The discovery forced the removal of her pre-eighteen films from American distribution and cost the industry millions in losses. Industry professionals remained divided on her status, with some colleagues insisting she was complicit and others sympathizing with her as an exploited minor. The scandal prompted new regulatory requirements mandating multiple forms of age verification for adult performers.

She transitioned to mainstream entertainment in the late 1980s after studying at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. Her film roles included appearances in John Waters' Cry-Baby as Wanda Woodward, Not of This Earth, Serial Mom, Blade, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno. She also guest-starred on television programs including Melrose Place, Profiler, and Gilmore Girls, and provided voice work for Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. Her dramatic performance in Excision earned her a Saturn Award nomination. She was inducted into both the XRCO and AVN Halls of Fame, though these honors were later revoked due to the underage controversy.

In 2002, she married Jeff Gruenewald, with whom she had a son born in 2007. She published her memoir, Underneath It All, in 2003
