About Zuleyka Rivera

Born on October 3, 1987, Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza is a prominent figure from Puerto Rico, recognized for her achievements in beauty pageants and her career in acting. She earned the prestigious titles of Miss Puerto Rico Universe in 2006 and subsequently Miss Universe in the same year. Rivera embarked on her acting journey in telenovelas, making her debut in Telemundo's production of Dame Chocolate.

Hailing from Cayey, Rivera spent her formative years in Salinas alongside her parents, Jerry Rivera and Carmen Mendoza, and her two brothers, Jerry Jr. and Jose Rivera Mendoza. Before claiming the Miss Puerto Rico crown, she was victorious in the local pageant representing Salinas. Her early pageant experience also included a first runner-up placement in the Miss Teen Puerto Rico competition.

At the age of eighteen, Rivera's coronation as Miss Universe marked her as one of the youngest titleholders in the pageant's history. She represented Puerto Rico in the Miss Universe 2006 pageant, which was broadcast globally from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, on July 23, 2006. Following her performances in the swimsuit, evening gown, and interview segments, she was awarded the Miss Universe title by the outgoing queen, Natalie Glebova of Canada. Later that evening, Rivera experienced a brief fainting spell during a press conference, reportedly due to a combination of heat exhaustion from the stage lights and the considerable weight of her elaborate, chained gown.

Rivera's victory made her the fifth Puerto Rican to achieve the Miss Universe title, positioning the island as the third most successful entity in the pageant's history, trailing only the United States and Venezuela. Her win continued a strong streak for Puerto Rico, as she was the third consecutive delegate from the island to secure a top-five position at Miss Universe, following Alba Reyes' second runner-up placement in 2004 and Cynthia Olavarría's first runner-up finish in 2005. Rivera's triumph occurred just five years after Denise Quiñones, the most recent previous winner from Puerto Rico, secured the crown.

As Miss Universe, Rivera undertook extensive representation duties for the Miss Universe Organization both domestically and internationally. She resided in New York City, sharing an apartment with Miss USA Tara Conner and Miss Teen USA 2006 Katie Blair. She passed her Miss Universe crown to Riyo Mori of Japan at the Miss Universe 2007 pageant, held in Mexico City, Mexico, on May 28, 2007.

Following her Los Angeles coronation on July 23, 2006, Rivera participated in numerous interviews in Los Angeles and upon her arrival in New York. From late July to early August, she traveled to Japan, where she presented the Five Star Diamond Award at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Tokyo. She also engaged in a photoshoot with Kurara Ch
