Alanis Morissette — Biography
Born in Ottawa, Canada, on June 1, 1974, Alanis Nadine Morissette carries a name of Greek origin, a feminine echo of her father, Alan. Her mother is Georgia, and she is one of three siblings, with brothers Chad and Wade, her twin. Young Alanis found her footing at the piano by age six, and later picked up the guitar at twenty-one. Her musical journey began in 1986 with a single titled "Fate Stay With Me," featuring "Find The Right Man" on its flip side. Canada saw the release of two dance-pop records under her name: "Alanis" in 1991, followed by "Now Is The Time" in 1992. At eighteen, she relocated to Toronto, attempting collaborations with various musical talents, though these partnerships proved unfruitful.
A pivotal connection was forged in 1994 with producer and songwriter Glen Ballard, a seasoned professional who had previously lent his expertise to luminaries like Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, and Barbra Streisand. By nineteen, Morissette had made the move to Los Angeles. June 13, 1995 marked the arrival of "Jagged Little Pill" on Madonna's Maverick Records. This album showcased a deeply personal and confessional songwriting style for Alanis, achieving a global sales figure of approximately 30 million copies. It distinguished itself as the best-selling album by a female artist and ranked third among all albums historically.
Following a period of internal struggles, which even led her to question the possibility of further recording, and a restorative trip to India, Alanis re-emerged. Her song "Uninvited" surfaced on the soundtrack for "City of Angels" on March 31, 1998. The same year saw the release of her album "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie." Morissette took the directorial reins for the music videos "Joining You," "Unsent," and "So Pure" from this album. Her foray into acting came in 1999 with a role as God in the film "Dogma," for which she also contributed the song "Still" to the soundtrack. In 1999, she also recorded the "MTV Unplugged" album. The year 2000 found Alanis performing in the Broadway production of "The Vagina Monologues." She currently resides in Brentwood, California.
