Aryna Sabalenka — Biography

Aryna Siarhiejeŭna Sabalenka, born on May 5, 1998, is a professional tennis player from Belarus. She currently holds the title of world No. 1 in women's singles as recognized by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), and she is a former world No. 1 in women's doubles. Throughout her career, Sabalenka has secured 20 titles at the WTA Tour level in singles, including three major championships at the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024, as well as the US Open in 2024, along with nine titles in WTA 1000 events. In doubles, she has claimed six titles, two of which were major victories at the US Open in 2019 and the Australian Open in 2021, both achieved in partnership with Elise Mertens. Sabalenka garnered attention in 2017 when she, alongside Aliaksandra Sasnovich, led the Belarusian Fed Cup team to a runner-up finish, despite both players being ranked outside the top 75 at that time. She concluded the years 2018 and 2019 positioned at No. 11 in the singles rankings. After reaching two major singles semifinals in 2021, Sabalenka ascended to the world No. 2 ranking but found it challenging to sustain that level of performance throughout 2022. In 2023, she celebrated her first major singles title at the Australian Open, which also propelled her to the world No. 1 ranking, resulting in her being named the ITF World Champion for the year. She not only defended her Australian Open title but also triumphed at the US Open in the following year, finishing the season as the top-ranked player. In 2025, Sabalenka advanced to the finals of both the Australian and French Opens, ultimately finishing as a runner-up at each. She began participating regularly in doubles in 2019, achieving immediate success with Mertens by winning the Sunshine Double (Indian Wells and Miami) that same year. After securing the US Open doubles title later that season, she made her first appearance at the WTA Finals. With her victory at the Australian Open in 2021, Sabalenka obtained the world No. 1 ranking in doubles, but thereafter she chose to focus solely on singles competition. Known for her aggressive playing style, she consistently produces high numbers of both winners and unforced errors, and her height contributes to a formidable serve.
