Jessica Andrea Steinhauser, known professionally as Asia Carrera, entered the world on August 6, 1973, in New York City before her family relocated to Little Silver, New Jersey during her youth. The daughter of a German-Swiss father and Japanese mother, she is the oldest of four children, with two brothers and one sister. Carrera demonstrated exceptional intellectual abilities from an early age, teaching herself to read by four years old, performing piano recitals at Carnegie Hall twice prior to turning fifteen, and scoring above 1440 on her SATs, which earned her both a National Merit Scholarship and a Garden State Scholarship. At sixteen, she accepted a teaching position for English at Tsuruga College in Japan. However, she left home at seventeen following family tensions, resulting in a period of homelessness.
