Brigitte Lahaie — Biography

Brigitte Lahaie, born on October 12, 1955, in Tourcoing, France, is a media personality, actress, and former adult film star. She embarked on her career at the age of 18, beginning with nude modeling for magazines. Although she appears in Africa Erotica (1970), her role was only added later; she is not part of the original film. Lahaie's foray into adult films spanned from 1975 to 1980, after which she shifted her focus to more conventional cinema. Often referred to as the "Queen of French Porn," she was raised by a banker father and an accountant mother and has two brothers and a sister. In 1975, Brigitte relocated to Paris with her sister, where she worked in a shoe store before landing her first film opportunity via a newspaper ad. A year after France legalized hardcore pornography in 1976, she began performing in explicit films. She gained recognition within the adult film industry and later appeared in a minor role in the horror film The Grapes of Death (1978), directed by cult filmmaker Jean Rollin. Lahaie also secured a leading role in Rollin's Fascination (1979). By the early 1980s, she opted to leave the adult industry, choosing instead to pursue conventional film roles under the name Brigitte Simonin. Her career in mainstream cinema includes small parts in movies like Diva (1981) and Henry & June (1990). In 1987, Lahaie released her autobiography, recorded a pop single, and performed a successful one-woman show detailing her life and career. She later became the host of a daily talk radio program focused on sexuality and relationships. In 2014, Lahaie was recognized as a Film Pioneer in the XRCO Hall of Fame. She requested to be honored under her stage name, Brigitte Lahaie, a French adaptation of her Flemish surname "vanmeerhaeghe," where "la haie" translates to "the hedge" in French.
