Charli XCX — Biography

Charlotte Emma Aitchison, who goes by the stage name Charli XCX, is an accomplished English singer and songwriter. She was born in Cambridge and spent her childhood in Start Hill, Essex. In 2008, she began sharing her music on Myspace, which caught the attention of a promoter who encouraged her to perform at warehouse raves. By 2010, she secured a record deal with Asylum Records, subsequently releasing a string of singles and mixtapes during 2011 and 2012. Charli XCX gained significant recognition in 2012 when she collaborated with the Swedish duo Icona Pop, featuring on the hit track "I Love It," which achieved global success. Her debut studio album, titled True Romance, came out in 2013 to favorable reviews but did not achieve the expected commercial success.

In 2014, she lent her vocals to the hook and bridge of "Fancy," a song by Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, which ended the year as one of the best-selling singles worldwide and earned two Grammy Award nominations. That same year, Charli XCX released "Boom Clap," her first solo top-ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The end of 2014 marked the release of her second studio album, Sucker, which showcased a punk influence and included popular singles like "Break the Rules" and "Doing It."

In 2015, Charli XCX collaborated with producers from the UK collective PC Music, exploring a more avant-garde sound and aesthetic. While crafting her third album, she put out the Vroom Vroom EP in 2016 and two mixtapes in 2017—Number 1 Angel and Pop 2—alongside various singles, including the BPI-certified tracks "After the Afterparty," "Boys," and "1999." Her third and fourth albums, Charli (2019) and How I'm Feeling Now (2020), were met with critical acclaim. In 2022, her fifth studio album, Crash, marked her most significant commercial achievement to date.

In 2023, she contributed the single "Speed Drive" to Barbie the Album, the soundtrack for the film Barbie. The following year, Charli XCX released her sixth studio album, Brat, which also received positive reviews. Beyond her own music, she has co-written tracks for various artists, including Iggy Azalea's "Beg for It" (2014), Selena Gomez's "Same Old Love" (2015), Blondie's "Tonight" featuring Debbie Harry (2017), the Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello collaboration "Señorita" (2019), and Sigala and Rita Ora's "You for Me" (2021).
