Born in San Francisco, California, she was raised in Menlo Park, a nearby suburb. Her father, Walter Smith, worked as a computer market researcher, while her mother, Lora Thorne, was a therapist. After their divorce when Courtney was seven, she alternated living with each parent. She has one older sister, Jennifer, who is in the advertising field. Courtney attended Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, California, before graduating from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, California, in 1985. During her high school years, she also showcased her talent with the Ensemble Theater Company in Mill Valley.
