Dana Plato — Biography

Dana Plato's story is one of those numerous Hollywood tales that feels as though it should have concluded on a more positive note. Born under the sign of Scorpio in southern California, she was the second child of a teenage mother who was already facing difficulties in caring for her first child, just 18 months old at the time. In June 1965, Dana was adopted by Dan Plato, a truck company owner, and his wife, Florine, affectionately known as "Kay." She originally bore the surname Strain before taking on Plato—a rather unusual coincidence. Raised in the San Fernando Valley, her family life shifted when her parents divorced when she was just three, leaving her upbringing primarily in the hands of her mother.

Dana is perhaps best recognized for her portrayal of Kimberly Drummond on the beloved sitcom DIFF'RENT STROKES, which aired from 1978 to 1986. Following her departure from the show, she aimed to carve out a successful acting career, but her efforts were met with mixed results. Dana made occasional appearances in various made-for-TV movies and independent films, in addition to doing voice-over work. Eventually, she transitioned into the adult film industry, though none of these paths seemed to lead to lasting stability for her. At the age of 34, after battling years of financial instability and persistent issues with substance abuse, she tragically passed away from an overdose of prescription medications. Once seen as a promising star among child actors, it appears clear in hindsight that Hollywood could have taken better care of her during her struggles. Dana Kimberly Drummond Plato will be remembered fondly and mourned, missed for all time. Ave atque vale.
