Ellen Barkin — Biography

Born on April 16, 1954, Ellen Rona Barkin established herself as a notable American actress. Her career gained significant momentum with her pivotal part in the 1982 movie Diner. Throughout the subsequent years, she took on leading characters in a series of films, including Tender Mercies and Eddie and the Cruisers in 1983, followed by The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension in 1984. Her prominent roles continued with The Big Easy in 1986, and later in 1989, she appeared in both Johnny Handsome and Sea of Love. In 1991, Barkin earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for her central performance in the film Switch. Her filmography further includes Man Trouble and Into the West in 1992, This Boy's Life in 1993, Bad Company and Wild Bill in 1995, and The Fan in 1996. She also featured in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in 1998, Drop Dead Gorgeous in 1999, Crime and Punishment in Suburbia in 2000, Palindromes in 2004, Trust the Man in 2005, Ocean's Thirteen in 2007, Brooklyn's Finest in 2009, and The Cobbler in 2014. For her work in the television film Before Women Had Wings, Barkin was awarded a Primetime Emmy Award in 1998. In 2011, she achieved a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play, marking her debut on the Broadway stage in The Normal Heart. From 2016 to 2019, Barkin portrayed the central character, Janine "Smurf" Cody, in the TNT drama series Animal Kingdom. Earlier, from 2012 to 2013, she starred as Jane Forrest in the NBC sitcom The New Normal. As a producer, her credits encompass the films Letters to Juliet and Shit Year, both from 2010, and Another Happy Day in 2011.
