Über Katie Holmes
Kate Noelle Holmes entered the world two months early, weighing just four pounds, on December 18, 1978, in Toledo, Ohio. She is the daughter of Kathleen Ann Craft, a philanthropist, and Martin Joseph Holmes, Sr., a lawyer. Of German, Irish, and English descent, her parents have often remarked that her assertive nature likely stems from her premature arrival. As the youngest sibling, Katie grew up surrounded by three sisters and one brother, always being the baby of the family.
In her teenage years, she started attending modeling school, and at the age of sixteen, she was encouraged by a teacher to enter a modeling competition alongside her classmates. Competing in the International Modeling and Talent Association event, she showcased her talents through singing, dancing, and performing a monologue from the classic film To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). By the end of her time in New York, Katie had earned numerous accolades but decided that modeling lacked the challenge she sought. Therefore, at seventeen, she relocated to Los Angeles to pursue film auditions. Just her second audition led to her casting in Ang Lee's The Ice Storm (1997), where she portrayed Libbets Casey, a wealthy New Yorker pursued by two central characters. Although it was a minor role, it marked the start of her acting journey.
Following the thrill of her debut film, Katie began submitting audition tapes for television pilots while also participating in the musical Damn Yankees at her all-girls Catholic high school, where she played Lola. When Kevin Williamson received her audition tape for his new series Dawson's Creek (1998), the producers were eager for her to come to Hollywood for an in-person reading. However, she had a prior commitment to her school's opening night, prompting her to inform them that she couldn’t attend. Luckily, the producers were determined to cast her, prompting them to reschedule her callback, ultimately leading to her landing the role of Joey Potter.
During her first year on Dawson's Creek, which ran for six years and ended in May 2003, Katie managed to shoot two films, Disturbing Behavior (1998) and Go (1999), winning the Best Breakthrough Female Performance at the 1999 MTV Movie Awards for the former. In 2000, she starred alongside Michael Douglas in Wonder Boys, portraying Hannah Green, a published author and boarder at her teacher’s house, who finds herself enamored with him. Her first lead role arrived in 2002 with Abandon, where she played Katie Burke, a college student haunted by the mysterious disappearance of her boyfriend.
As Dawson's Creek neared its conclusion, the bittersweet farewell in May 2003 also opened new opportunities for the cast to pursue film projects. Later that year in October, Katie appeared in two new films: Pieces of April (2003) and The Singing Detective (2003). The former is a heartfelt Thanksgiving story featuring April, the misunderstood family member, who hopes to prepare
