Kelly Key — Biography

Born Kelly de Almeida Afonso Freitas on March 3, 1983, in Rio de Janeiro, Kelly Key is a multifaceted Brazilian talent known for her work as a presenter, actress, singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. She ventured into art direction for her own shows starting in 2004. While she completed a performing arts course at Teatro O Tablado as a teenager, she never pursued acting professionally. She also earned a degree in administration from Centro Universitário Augusto Motta (UNISUAM) in 2010. In 2015, she began studying veterinary medicine at Estácio de Sá University but paused her studies upon becoming pregnant with her third child. Kelly has been involved in significant charitable efforts, including a 2002 Federal Government campaign promoting condom use and, since 2003, serving as godmother for the organization Friends of Childhood with Cancer (AMICCA). She has been married to Mico Freitas, a former Angolan footballer and businessman and heir to the COSAL Group, since 2004. The family fortune of her husband's family has been estimated at 500 million Euros. Kelly is a mother to three children: Suzanna, born in 2000; Jaime Vitor, born in 2005; and Artur, born in 2017. Her musical career has seen over 2 million copies sold. Her professional journey began in 1999 when she signed with TV Globo and debuted as the host of the program Samba, Pagode & Cia. In 2001, Warner signed her, and she released her debut single, "Escondido." However, it was the song "Baba" that propelled her to widespread radio recognition. Her self-titled debut album, Kelly Key, was released on August 16, selling 500,000 copies and achieving platinum status in both Brazil and Portugal. This album also featured the popular tracks "Anjo" and "Cachorrinho." In 2003, she released the album Do Meu Jeito, which sold another 500,000 copies and included the singles "Adoleta" and "Chic, Chic." In 2004, she entered into a contract with Band to host an auditorium program reminiscent of MTV Brasil, but was reassigned to Band Kids. This led to her contract termination a few months later due to her pregnancy.
