Lara Fabian — Biography
Lara Fabian, born Lara Sophie Katy Crokaert on January 9, 1970, is a vocalist and lyricist with dual Belgian-Canadian nationality. Her musical career has seen her sell more than 20 million albums globally, securing her a place among Belgium's top-selling musicians.
Born in Etterbeek, Brussels, Fabian's parentage includes a Flemish father and a Sicilian mother. She spent her early years in Catania, Sicily, where Italian served as her primary language. In 1991, she relocated to Quebec, and by 1995, she had officially acquired Canadian citizenship, complementing her Belgian heritage. She resided in Brussels again from 2003, seeking proximity to her parents, and by 2015, she was living in the Walloon Brabant province, near the capital. Ultimately, in 2017, she made Montreal, Quebec, her permanent home, reuniting with her family.
Fabian is an only child, daughter to Pierre Crokaert, of Flemish descent, and Maria Luisa Serio, who is Sicilian. Her upbringing took place in Ruisbroek, a Belgian town. Recognizing her innate musical ability from a young age, her parents enrolled her at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels when she was eight. She pursued her studies there for a decade.
As a soprano, Fabian possesses a remarkable vocal range extending across three octaves, from C3 to G5 during live performances. Her linguistic talents are extensive; she is fluent in Italian, French, Spanish, Sicilian, and English, with a working knowledge of Flemish. Her vocal contributions have also graced songs in Azerbaijani, German, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, and Turkish.
Fabian shared a significant fourteen-year professional and personal partnership with Rick Allison, with whom she penned many of her most celebrated songs, until their separation in March 2003. From 2006 to 2012, she was involved with French director, producer, and composer Gérard Pullicino, with whom she has a daughter born in 2007. In 2013, she married Gabriel Di Giorgio, a Sicilian illusionist.
