Madeline Kahn — Biography

Madeline Kahn, born Madeline Gail Wolfson, carved a singular path through American entertainment as an actress, comedian, and singer. Her comedic genius was a force of nature, marked by an extraordinary ability to blend sensuality with uproarious laughter. This often manifested in her memorable portrayals of women who, having perhaps waited too long, desperately sought to reclaim lost desires. Her most celebrated performances were in films helmed by Peter Bogdanovich, and most notably, Mel Brooks.

Kahn’s entry into acting was inspired by her mother. She soon discovered opera wasn't her forte, redirecting her considerable talents elsewhere, though she demonstrated a powerful vocal ability in Mel Brooks’ "Blazing Saddles" and other productions. Iconic roles include the world-weary prostitute Lilli von Shtupp in "Blazing Saddles" and Elizabeth, the spirited "financier" opposite Gene Wilder in "Young Frankenstein." On the small screen, she graced "Cosby," Bill Cosby's second, less commercially successful sitcom, with a recurring presence. Her career was studded with honors, including an Academy Award nomination for her work in "Paper Moon" and an Emmy Award nomination. In 1987, she distinguished herself by winning an Emmy for an ABC Afterschool Special.
