Mary Steenburgen — Biography

An accomplished American performer, Mary Steenburgen possesses talents as an actress, comedian, vocalist, and tunesmith. Her formative acting education took place at New York's esteemed Neighborhood Playhouse during the 1970s. Her screen debut occurred in 1978 with the Western comedy Goin' South. Steenburgen garnered significant critical praise for her portrayal in Jonathan Demme's 1980 comedy-drama Melvin and Howard, earning her both a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and an Academy Award in the same category. Further accolades included a Golden Globe nomination for Miloš Forman's 1981 drama Ragtime, a BAFTA TV Award nomination for the 1985 miniseries Tender Is the Night, and a Primetime Emmy nomination for the 1988 television film The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank. Beyond her acting roles in various television series, Steenburgen has contributed her songwriting and singing talents to numerous films, often appearing in the very projects she enhanced with her music. Her original song "Glasgow (No Place Like Home)," featured in the 2018 musical film Wild Rose, secured her the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Song.
