Oksana Baiul — Biography
Oksana Serhiyivna Baiul-Farina is a former Ukrainian figure skater who competed professionally. Her competitive career highlights include securing the world championship title in 1993 and achieving Olympic gold in ladies' singles in 1994, famously surpassing Nancy Kerrigan. This victory marked a significant moment, making Baiul the inaugural Olympic champion representing Ukraine under its own flag. She also holds the distinction of being the second athlete to win a Winter Olympic gold for Ukraine, following Viktor Petrenko's success in 1992, and importantly, she was the first Olympic champion from the newly independent Ukraine across any sporting discipline. Following her triumphant 1994 Olympic win, Baiul made the decision to relocate to the United States, where she began her career in professional skating tours and exhibitions. This move was inspired by her decision to join one of her coaches in Connecticut. Subsequently, Baiul expanded her activities to include various television appearances and participation in benefit skating events. She has made her home in the United States since 1994. In 1997, she released two books: one detailing her life story and another focused on the sport of figure skating.
